The GGFI report, which surveys the opinions of finance industry professionals and academics, ranked London as the leading centre for green finance out of 67 global financial centres. The UK capital received a score of 79.8 out of 100, placing it ahead of other major financial centres such as Amsterdam, Zurich, and Paris.
The report cited London’s strong ecosystem for green finance, including its deep pool of green finance expertise, broad range of green financial products and services, and supportive policy and regulatory environment. It also highlighted the UK’s ambitious climate goals, including its commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
The GGFI report also noted that the global green finance market has continued to grow despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The market is expected to expand rapidly in the coming years as more investors seek sustainable and socially responsible investment opportunities.
City of London Corporation Policy Chair Catherine McGuinness commented on the news, saying, “This latest ranking is a testament to London’s position as a global leader in green finance, and our commitment to tackling climate change. We are determined to continue to innovate, collaborate and mobilise finance to create a more sustainable future.”
London‘s continued success in the green finance sector is a significant achievement for the UK and highlights the importance of sustainable finance in the global economy. As the world moves towards a more sustainable future, London is well-positioned to lead the way in green finance and play a key role in achieving global climate goals.
