UK ETA Rules Now in Force
From February 2026, the UK will fully enforce its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme. For many business travellers and international visitors, this will introduce an important change: no ETA, no boarding.
If your teams travel to the UK visa-free for short stays, meetings, or relocation planning trips, this is something to prepare for now.
What is an ETA?
An Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital permission to travel to the UK. It is not a visa and it does not guarantee entry, but it is required before boarding transport to the UK for many non-visa nationals.
An ETA:
- Costs £16 (expected to increase to £20)
- Is valid for multiple journeys
- Allows stays of up to six months at a time
- Is valid for two years or until the passport expires (whichever comes first)
Most applicants receive a decision within minutes via the UK ETA app.
Who Needs an ETA?
Visitors who:
- Do not require a visa for short stays (up to six months)
- Do not already hold UK immigration status
British and Irish citizens do not need an ETA.
Transit Passengers
If someone is transiting through the UK and passes through UK passport control, they will need an ETA.
Passengers transiting airside through Heathrow or Manchester without passing border control currently do not require one.
Why This Matters for Businesses
For companies relocating employees or welcoming international visitors, the ETA scheme introduces operational considerations:
- International hires attending meetings before their visa starts may require an ETA.
- Founders, investors and short-term assignees travelling visa-free must apply before departure.
- Dual British citizens must travel using a valid British passport or Certificate of Entitlement.
Carriers are now required to digitally verify travel permission before boarding. If an ETA is required but not in place, the passenger will not be permitted to travel.
How to Apply
The easiest way to apply is via the official UK ETA app (available on the Apple App Store and Google Play).
Applicants must:
- Pay the fee
- Provide passport and contact details
- Upload a compliant digital photo
- Answer suitability and criminality questions
We recommend applying at least three working days before travel, even though many decisions are granted quickly.
