UK Fintech Investment Nearly Triples in H1 2024 Despite Global Downturn

Investment in the UK’s fintech sector has seen a significant surge in the first half of 2024, nearly tripling despite a global downturn.

A number of large deals, such as a $4 billion acquisition of financial software provider IRIS Software Group and a $999 million venture capital investment in small business marketplace platform Abound, have strengthened the UK‘s position as the leading hub for fintech funding in Europe.

Although the number of mergers and acquisitions, private equity, and venture capital deals in fintech declined in H1 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, UK fintech companies still secured more investment than the rest of the EMEA region combined, according to data from KPMG.

Total fintech investment in the UK amounted to $7.3 billion (£5.7 billion) in the first six months of 2024, up from $2.5 billion (£2 billion) during the same period the previous year.

While this represents almost a threefold increase, ongoing geopolitical challenges, high inflation, and rising interest rates have curbed investor enthusiasm compared to the record-breaking levels of 2021, as noted by KPMG.

Nevertheless, the UK is faring better than the global fintech market, which saw investment fall from $62.3 billion in the second half of 2023 to $51.9 billion in the first half of 2024.

Hannah Dobson, partner and UK head of fintech at KPMG, commented: “With the new UK government in place and the potential for interest rates to finally decrease, there is optimism that fintech investment will start to pick up in late 2024 and into early 2025.

“We anticipate growing investor interest in artificial intelligence and its applications in the fintech and regulatory technology sectors. Regulation will remain a key area of focus in the EU, especially for crypto and digital asset companies as they prepare for the implementation of the EU Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation, expected in December 2024.”

In the first quarter of 2024, fintech reclaimed its position as the top recipient of tech funding, surpassing climate tech, which had taken the lead last year.
